SUGGESTION ON HOW TO RUN THE PROJECT IN YOUR SCHOOL
Remember this is only a suggestion - adapt freely! Regular drawing is the key element to this festival, so try to do things every day!

-
Talk to the children about the festival first. You might want to do this as an assembly or in class. Tell them how much fun drawing is, and that there will be, literally, thousands of others joining in with the festival.

-
You might want to show the children the assembly video (coming soon!) to get them started and excited about what is going to happen.

-
Try and find a regular time slot to draw each day. It might be just after assembly or after playtime. I would suggest NOT to do it at the end of the day - you may run out of time, the children are tired and it doesn't show them that you think it is important. It seems like a lot of time to give - but its worth it!

-
Give them their drawing books - instil a sense of pride, and excitement in the drawing books (please call them drawing books - it emphasises the idea of it being a DRAWING festival)

-
Play them the daily theme video or if you would rather introduce the theme in a different way that's wonderful - the more input the teacher gives the better. As well as the video there will be a daily Powerpoint of all the inspiration images, should a class teacher find this more useful for their class.

-
Give them a set time to draw - you know what is the best length! But make sure it is protected time - try not to have any children leave for other activities!

-
Teachers, LSA should draw too - it shows the children how important it is! How about inviting other school staff (cleaners/ dinner people/ admin/ governors... Headteachers!) to join classes each day to draw as well - they will love that they are being included!

-
At the end of each session take some time to share and praise! (Don't 'mark' them or give out stickers for the 'best' - it's really important that everyone is valued.)

-
....do the same the next day... regularity is the key!

-
There are some additional ideas for you to try noted below

Why not make it a two week drawing festival with LOTS of other things going on in the school?

Daily Theme Creative Ideas
Day 1 - (March 2nd) – Weather
Wellington boot splash picture.
On a plain piece of paper (remember to name it first … there will be a whole class load of similar ones) splodge some blue ready-mix paint. It will work better if the ready mix has had some water added to it. If appropriate (some children don’t like doing it as it makes them feel lightheaded) use a straw to ‘spread’ the blue paint about, if not blowing use a brush or fingers. Make sure the blue ‘slash’ is bigger than the wellington boots!
While this is drying the children can colour in the wellington boots. Click HERE to download the template. It works better if it is lots of bold and bright colours, and you use felt pens or colouring pencils.
Now cut out the boots and add them onto the picture!
SPLASH!
Day 2 - (March 3rd) - in the Forest
Forest outline animals painting
Download animal outlines HERE. Enlarge individual animal outlines. Children carefully cut out the outlines. These are them placed on paper. A few small blobs of blutac will help them hold it still. With a brush with some paint on move from the dot in the middle of the animal shape to well over the edge of the shape. Always paint from the centre of the shape outwards. Carefully remove the shape. It would be a good exercise for colour mixing activities, trying to get as many ‘forest’ colours as possible.
Day 3 - (March 4th) – Dinosaurs
Madasaurus dinosaur collage
This one needs a fair deal of preparation and is more suited to EY and KS1 but could be adapted.
Preparation: Using large carboard boxes create some stand up dinosaurs. CLICK HERE for ideas of the finished product.
Give the children an assortment of ‘things’ (buttons, beads, coloured paper shapes, stickers… etc) to decorate the cut outs. Instead of aiming to be particularly neat and tidy let them go ‘mad’ … it is a Madasaurus after all!
Day 4 - (March 5th) - Books (World Book Day)
Why not make your own mini book (sometimes called a mini-zien) CLICK here to visit a webpage with info, and an instruction sheet you can download.
As often is the case with external websites this is not a link to share with children. There are possible links on the page that are not suitable for primary school children, but the downloadable instruction sheet is!

Day 5 -(March 6th) - Up in the Sky
Hanging display
Here are a few ideas for this one: 1) on thick (but still thin enough to cut with scissors) get the children to draw out things that ‘fly’, after it is cut out, get them to draw the same thing on the back… but of course it will be a mirror image! Hang them up in the classroom above the desks. 2) make a ‘Whacky Flying Things” display ask the children to bring in things that would ‘never fly’ (make sure they are not too big) things like an odd sock, a banana, a plastic mug etc…. then using card and sticky tape get the children to make ‘wings’ for them and hang them above the desks…. Googly eyes and Sharpie smiley mouths always makes things more fun!
Day 6 - (March 9th) - Small Things
Magnifying glass drawing
If you can find some small things and real magnifying glasses, it is a wonderful thing to get children to try drawing things really close up. Drawing things much bigger than they really are is difficult for children, but a good drawing exercise. Down load the magnifying glass template HERE if you want to ‘frame’ the picture. Draw in the glass bit them cut out the whole shape.
Day 7 - (March 10th ) - Something beginning with E
This one is for older children. A good opportunity to explore what a dictionary is, and how it can be used. Create a sort of illustrated dictionary. Each child in class has to choose a collection of words, starting with an E, and create an illustrated dictionary entry:
The Word, A brief definition, and then a picture.
These could be compiled into (alphabetical) order and displayed as a class ‘Dictionary for E’
Day 8 - (March 11th ) - A Magic World
Print off the collection of “Magical World’ art ideas cards Page one HERE and page 2 HERE. If you can print on card or mount them on card it will mean they cannot see what’s on them. Get them to pick 5 cards. They can draw any Magical World picture, but they must include these 5 things. Encourage them to draw their own version of the images, but they can copy if they feel they need to.
Day 9 - (March 12th) – Pattern
Patterned bedsheets
Using the template HERE colour the bed sheets and pillowcase in a wonderful pattern. You can use whatever medium suites your children best. They can draw in themselves sleeping (eyes closed!) or another character! Colour before cutting out! Carefully cut out the bed, bed sheets and person. Then stick them down!
Day 10 -(March 13th) - In the Kitchen
Plate of food
(Use small paper plates- it makes the task easier!) Using an assortment of materials (paper, card, sponge, wool etc) create a plate full of ‘food’ if you used a lot of PVA glue it will take a while to dry, but the finished result look better especially if you have things like wool as spaghetti or rolled up tissue paper balls as pees or sweetcorn. Try not to be too restrictive – let them use their imagination! You could make a patterned tablecloth (in connection with day 9’s pattern… how about knives and forks made from silver card!?
(A good opportunity to talk about healthy eating)
School's Video Page
On this page you will find all the videos you need to show the children to inspire them to Go Draw in School!
Click on the camera below to visit the page.

Please check that your school's system will play the videos. If you have any problems please contact the organisers.

At the moment there is a video from LAST YEAR so you can test your IT and get things ready
School's Powerpoint Page
The daily videos are the preferred way to inspire the children every day.
However, there are Powerpoint presentations for each day. These could be useful, especially for EY, if more discussion and language practice is needed.
It might also be useful to download them incase there is an internet failure.
Click on the Powerpoint logo below:

Go Draw at Home
Over the middle weekend of Go Draw in School the children will be challenged to Go Draw at Home.

The Go Draw at Home Game is based around the faces that Picasso drew. Follow the link HERE

Quick fire drawing.
(This works best during a lunch time break)
Have two or more teams (they could be School houses/teams, or age group splits etc). For each team set up a large white board (or large paper) in the playground. The team members queue up and take it in turns to choose a word from the WORD LIST. When they have chosen a word, they draw a picture of it on the board... where ever they like. Speed is of the essence. When they are finished the next person choses a word and draws a picture of that. You will build up a collection of wonderful drawings all on the same board!
Set a time limit. Have the children come and draw ‘when they feel like it’. Don’t organise it too much let the children spur others on.
The winning team is the team that makes the most drawings (you can keep a count by crossing off ‘chosen words’), not the 'best' drawings.
Chalk Draw
One break time bring out a big box of chalks and let them draw on the playground. A lot of schools already do this but try and let them draw where they are not normally allowed to draw – make it special and exciting!
What’s going on in my Brain!
Using the SIDE ON VIEW OF HEAD fill the brain with drawing thoughts and ideas! You might be surprised with what they come up with!
Drawing in pairs
On a blank piece of paper two (or more) people draw a picture, working together. The catch is once the drawing implements have touched the paper, they can’t be taken off until the picture is finished. Lots of wonderful communication is needed for this one!
Shadow drawing
Place some interesting objects on a piece of white paper an place in strong lighting such as a spot light or in the sun (this is interesting as the sun/shadow will move). Then draw around the outline of the shadow to make some interesting shapes. These could be overlapped with other object’s shadows – perhaps in different colours. You could go big and draw round the shadows of people!

Freaky Faces
Print off the PEOPLE WITHOUT HEADS picture. (You could also get fashion catalogues and cut out the people from them – without their heads!) Let the children draw on ‘freaky faces’ to replace the heads. They could be wonderful monsters, or top-class glamour models … that’s up to the artist to decide!
Can you draw the King singing with a banana?
Give each children 3 small bits of paper each. Ask them on one piece to write the name of a famous person, imaginary or real. On another piece to write an -ing word (a verb). On the third write an object (noun). Collect all the bits of paper in three separate piles. Give each pile a shuffle and then hand them out (if a child has their original ideas get them to swap). Now they make up a sentence: Can you draw[famous person] [verb-ing] with [noun]? Now they draw it!
Drawing charades
Have a pile of cards each with a word on it. The children take it in turns to come up to the board (or on piece of paper if paying with smaller group) and chose a card, draw what is written on it so the rest of the group can guess. You could have two teams with the same list of words and have it as a ‘drawing race’
